History in the Shadow of the Tower: The Discovery of Fort Mose
Thursday, February 20, 2025 (6:30 PM - 8:00 PM) (EST)
Description
In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Lighthouse tower, the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum presents a lecture series titled History in the Shadow of the Tower. This lecture discusses the impact of Fort Mose and how its history has altered the historical narrative about slavery in North America. As the first settlement made up of free Africans in North America, Fort Mose provides evidence that the first Underground Railroad ran south as opposed to the north. Dr. Lori Lee, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Flagler College, and Mr. Chuck Meide, Director of the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program, lead this session sharing the important findings from the archaeological fieldwork conducted at the Fort Mose site. Funding for this program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities. Admission is free but reservations are required and can be obtained by clicking on 'Events' on the website of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. Under the '150th Events,' please select the 'Discovery of Fort Mose' event and complete your registration.
