Chamber Advocacy Plays Key Role in Final Nights of Lights Decision
The city of St. Augustine has officially set a permanent schedule for Nights of Lights, following a closely divided 3–2 vote by city commissioners. The decision establishes that the annual event will run from the third Saturday in November through Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend each year, offering consistency for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
Nights of Lights is more than just a seasonal attraction; it is one of the city’s most iconic traditions and a vital driver of winter tourism. Each year, the dazzling display draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, transforming the historic city into a vibrant destination during what would otherwise be a quieter season.
Local business owners made their voices heard during the public discussion, emphasizing how critical the event is to their financial stability. Many described the festival as essential to sustaining revenue and maintaining staffing levels during the winter months.
Among those addressing the commission was Isabelle Renault, President and CEO of the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce. Speaking on behalf of the business community, Renault urged commissioners not to shorten the event’s duration too significantly.
She highlighted that an earlier end to the season this year had negatively impacted businesses, with some reporting reduced revenue and even staff cuts. Renault stressed that these consequences were not hypothetical but based on feedback received from Chamber members.
In addition to the financial implications, she pointed out that January offers a unique opportunity for both visitors and locals to enjoy the event without peak holiday crowds. According to Renault, this period provides a more relaxed and accessible experience while still supporting local commerce.
Despite strong support from the business community, some commissioners raised concerns about the challenges associated with the event’s popularity. Issues such as traffic congestion, overcrowding, and the overall impact on residents’ quality of life were central to the debate.
Ultimately, the commission sought a compromise by preserving much of the event’s economic benefit while addressing community concerns. The adopted schedule shortens the season compared to some previous years but ensures it continues through the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
By making the schedule permanent, city leaders aim to provide clarity and predictability for all stakeholders. Businesses can better plan staffing and inventory, residents know what to expect each year, and visitors can reliably schedule trips around the festivities.
Under the new framework, Nights of Lights will kick off on Saturday, November 21, 2026, and run through Monday, January 18, 2027. While the debate revealed differing priorities within the community, the final decision underscores a shared recognition of the event’s importance. The event will continue to shine as a defining feature of St. Augustine’s cultural and economic landscape.
